For the people that hate it, you'll be happy to know that it's just a fad that'll be out of the mainstream soon enough and you won't need to hear it anymore and for the people that like it. So, seriously, this is what people are arguing about: a subgenre of a subgenre.

For bonus points, do this in front of the self-professed dubstep fan and watch their face drop when they picked anything but the Skrillex song, or they say "You mean only one of them is dubstep?" and for even more bonus points, get a self-professed dubstep fan to pick anything but the Skrillex song or claim "It's a trick question." All five of those songs are different genres, but, to the average person, they wouldn't know difference at all.Įven more confusing is that Skrillex's signature.sound is a later addition to dubstep - a lot of people think that's what defines a dubstep song, but it really isn't. Delta Nine - "Speaker Worship", and, let's say, Skrillex - "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites". īack with another one of those block rockin' beats Oizo - "Flat Beat", Benny Benassi - "Satisfaction", Chemical Brothers - "Block Rockin' Beats". Here's a good test: find someone that doesn't know much or anything for that matter about dubstep and play these five songs for them: Mr. And to the average person, it really doesn't sound any different. Originally, a mix of dub and 2-step, (dub basically meaning "remixing" and 2-step being an electronic music subgenre known for strange or unconventional beats) both of those are just a subgenre of any sort of electronica.

You see: dubstep is essentially a subgenre of a subgenre of an actual genre. I couldn't give two shits about dubstep either way, and you know why? Because all techno pretty much sounds like that to me. I'm sorry, kids, but I ain't gonna play the "indifferent" card. In fact, click on any popular dubstep song on YouTube and the Comments section will just be a fight between a bunch of stupid little shits either hating it like it's the worst thing that ever happened to music, or defending it as though it's their child and even better, click on any not-so well-known dubstep song on YouTube and you see a bunch of dumb fucks arguing with each other over different dubstep artists that couldn't chart to save their balls, and usually talking about how Skrillex sucks and even though it does sound at times like a Bulgan sucked off by a Shop-Vac in front of a broken fan. Ask someone about dubstep, and they usually got a strong opinion, one way or another, it's like Nickelback - people either will love it, or they hate it and mostly it's just because they're trendy to have an opinion either way, like being indifferent to it, makes you more of an outcast than liking or hating it.
